Next month Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will begin a global recall of 1.5 million of its RAM fullsize pickup trucks to fix tailgate latches that could fail. Four out of five of the vehicles were sold in the U.S.
The campaign targets 1500, 2500 and 3500 model trucks built during the 2015-2017 model years. All affected vehicles have a power locking tailgate. The recall does not apply to 2018 models, trucks with manual tailgate locks or vehicles with 8-foot beds.
FCA says a component in the power locking mechanism could break and allow the tailgate to fall open when the truck is moving. The company reports 5,600 warranty claims and repair orders related to the defect.
