Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is preparing to recall 506,400 of its 2007-2016 model Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide because the driver’s frontal airbag may not deploy in a crash.
FCA blames the clockspring electrical connection in the steering wheel hub. The company says the device become clogged with dirt or dust and lose contact if the vehicle is driven extensively off-road driving or with the top and doors removed.
The company notes that an airbag warning light will illuminate if the clockspring malfunctions. FCA reports no injuries linked to the flaw.
The callback involves 392,500 of the company’s 2007-2010 model Wranglers in the U.S., 35,400 in Canada, 8,500 in Mexico and 62,600 outside North America. The campaign also includes 7,400 Jeeps made during the 2011-2016 model years and equipped with right-hand drive for such special U.S. service such as mail delivery.
