Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is launching a global recall of 410,000 vehicles, all but about 51,000 of which are in the U.S. and Canada, to fix a wiring harness fault that could cause the engine to shut down unexpectedly.
Most of the affected vehicles were made in the 2015 model year and include the Chrysler 200 sedan, Jeep Renegade and Cherokee SUVs and Ram ProMaster City small commercial vans. Some 2014 model Cherokees also are involved.
FCA says a flaw in a wiring harness can create a fault code that prompts the electronic engine control module to protect the engine by switching it off. The problem can be temporarily cleared, but only by bringing the disabled vehicle to a halt, turning off the ignition and restarting the engine.
FCA plans to replace the wiring harness. It also will install a software update that enables the engine to continue operating in a reduced-power “limp mode” should the control module receive the fault code legitimately.
