Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S. to bolster their resistance to wireless cyber attacks.
The campaign covers vehicles equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreens and the company's Uconnect infotainment system. Affected models are:
- 2013-2015 Dodge Viper sports cars
- 2013-2015 Ram pickup trucks/chassis cabs
- 2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs
- 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SUVs
- 2015 Chrysler 200 and 300 sedans
- 2015 Dodge Charger sedans
- 2015 Dodge Challenger coupes
The callback was prompted by a report in Wired magazine earlier this week describing how two security experts were able to remotely take control of a Jeep Cherokee's air conditioning, power door locks, windshield wipers, throttle and brakes. The duo has been in contact with FCA for months, alerting the company to the security flaws it found.
FCA declares that unauthorized manipulation of software in its vehicles is a "criminal action." One of the security researchers who conducted the hack retorts, "I wonder what is cheaper: designing secure cars or doing recalls?"
