Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it has begun preparing its factory in Melfi, Italy, to begin making a plug-in hybrid version of its Jeep Renegade mini-SUV in early 2020.
The model is part of a €9 billion ($10.3 billion) initiative to launch a dozen electrified powertrains by 2022. The hybrid, plug-in and all-electric systems will be used to propel 30 models by then, according to the company.
FCA also confirms it plans to phase out diesel engines in its European passenger vehicles by 2021.
The Melfi plant will build the plug-in Renegade alongside the conventionally powered Fiat 500X mini-crossover and Renegade. The latter model will be equipped with an all-new engine being launched at the facility under a €200 million initiative.
