Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans to drop one of three production shifts at its venture in Kragujevac, Serbia, that makes the Fiat 500L minivan.
FCA confirms the plan to drop a shift but declines to indicate the number of people that will be affected. The plant normally employs 3,100 workers. A union leader tells Reuters says as many as 900 of them could be eliminated by the cutback.
The €1 billion factory is two-thirds owned by FCA and one-third by Serbia. Reuters say the facility made 100,000 Fiat 500L minivans last year, almost all exported to Europe and the U.S. Sales this year are down 16% in Europe and 63% in the U.S., according to market researchers JATO Dynamics.
