FCA Plans Layoffs at Minivan Plant in Serbia

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans to drop one of three production shifts at its venture in Kragujevac, Serbia, that makes the Fiat 500L minivan.
FCA confirms the plan to drop a shift but declines to indicate the number of people that will be affected. The plant normally employs 3,100 workers. A union leader tells Reuters says as many as 900 of them could be eliminated by the cutback.
The €1 billion factory is two-thirds owned by FCA and one-third by Serbia. Reuters say the facility made 100,000 Fiat 500L minivans last year, almost all exported to Europe and the U.S. Sales this year are down 16% in Europe and 63% in the U.S., according to market researchers JATO Dynamics.
