FCA US (formerly Chrysler Group) is preparing to launch a worldwide recall of 287,900 of its 2005 model Ram pickups to repair a loose rear axle pinion nut.
If the nut loosens, the rear axle could lock up and throw the truck into a spin.
The callback is scheduled to begin in mid-February. The campaign follows an investigation begun in June by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency was responding to 15 owner complaints that their trucks locked up without warning at speeds of at least 50 mph.
Reuters notes that Chrysler recalled 370,300 vehicles, including 2009-2011 model Ram pickups to fix a similar problem.
