Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has agreed to recall another 3.3 million vehicles worldwide to replace their driver-side airbag inflators.
The new campaign hikes the number of FCA vehicles recalled worldwide to replace inflators at nearly 3.7 million.
FCA's action is in response to a blunt demand from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this month the agency declared that FCA's initial refusal to comply threatened the safety of the company's customers and "defies common sense."
But FCA insists nobody has identified a defect in any inflator used in its vehicles. The company says the components in its airbag systems are different from those cited in five fatalities all involving Honda Motor Co. vehicles linked to Takata inflators.
FCA's broadened recall covers 2004-2007 model Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 large pickup trucks and Ram 350 chassis cabs; Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs; Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans; Dodge Magnum sport wagon; and Dodge Dakota/Mitsubishi Raider midsize pickup trucks.
