Electric vehicle startup Faraday Future Inc. has hired former General Motors Co. executive Peter Savagian to head its engineering operations.

Savagian had worked for GM since 1998, most recently serving as general director for electric drive systems and new products development. He previously led the development of GM’s EV1 electric car in the 1990s and held a variety of engineering leadership roles with Hughes Aircraft Co.

At Faraday, Savagian will oversee engineering for powertrain, battery and high-voltage systems. The Gardena, Calif.-based company hopes to begin making its first vehicle in 2018 at a new facility in Nevada. It also is partnering with Formula E’s Dragon Racing Team to transfer technology from the electric vehicle racing circuit into production cars.
