CEO Mark Fields tells NPR the new model will be a conventional gasoline-electric hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid. No other details were provided.
Currently, the most fuel efficient F-150 is powered by Ford’s 2.7-liter Ecoboost V-6 engine. That vehicle has a combined U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy rating of 22 mpg.
Other media reports indicate that Ford also is considering a diesel version of the F-150. But company officials note that a hybrid F-150 would pay for itself faster than a diesel would in the fullsize pickup.
