EV Racer Zips to 100 kph in Less than 1.8 Seconds

Swiss engineering students have developed an electric race car that can reach 100 kph in just under 1.8 seconds.

The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic car weighs 168 kg (370 lbs). It is propelled by four electric wheel hub motors that make a combined 1,630 Nm (1,200 lb-ft) of torque. Each 50-hp motor weighs just 3.4 kg (7.5 lbs).

The car, dubbed Grimsel, sports huge front and rear wings. Developers say the design creates enough downforce to enable the car to drive upside down on the roof of a tunnel at any speed above 110 kph (68 mph).

Grimsel was built in less than a year by 30 students at Switzerland's ETH Zurich and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Their car was developed as part of the worldwide Formula Student competition launched by the Society of Automotive Engineers more than 30 years ago.

The previous acceleration record of 2.1 seconds was set by an EV made by students at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
