Executives and consumers in the 17-country eurozone lost confidence about the region's economy for the second consecutive month, according to Eurostat.
The EU statistical service says its economic sentiment index dropped from 92.9 in April to 90.6 this month, the lowest reading since October 2009. The outlook was worst for industry and retail.
Across the EU, confidence slid 2.7 points to 90.5 in May, Eurostat says. Sentiment soured in the U.K. (-4.7 points), Italy (-4.3), France (-1.5), Germany (-1.4) and Spain (-1.0).
Separately, Eurostat says its gauge of the EU business climate fell 0.26 points to -0.77. The agency cites a gloomier view of future production, orders, exports and inventories.
