Inflation within the 19-nation eurozone remained unchanged at an annualized 0.2% in December, according to a flash estimate by Eurostat. Economists, who had expected 0.3% growth, consider 2% a healthy inflation rate.

The EU statistical service notes that December price growth of 1.2% for food and 1.1% for services was offset by a 6% drop in energy prices.

The disappointing inflation numbers indicate continuing weakness in the region’s economy. The figures also put pressure on the European Central Bank to take new action to stimulate the economy and avoid allowing the eurozone to slip into a dangerous deflationary spiral.
