Consumer prices in the eurozone, which rose at a 2.6% annualized pace in April, grew 2.4% in May, according to Eurostat, the EU statistics office. Easing energy prices helped make May's increase the smallest since February 2011.

Inflation remains above the 2% target of the European Central Bank. But some economists say the downward trend gives the ECB leeway to spur economic growth by cutting its key interest rate by 0.25 point to 0.75% in coming months.

The rate has been at a record-low 1% since December. Central bank policymakers are scheduled to meet on June 6.
