Growth of business activity in the eurozone climbed to its highest level since July, as growth in Germany and France offset slowing expansion elsewhere, London-based Markit Economics Ltd. says.

Markit's eurozone purchasing managers' composite output index rose to 53.5 in February from 52.6 in January, according to preliminary data. Final results are due in early March.

The research firm notes that employment in the region is growing at its fastest pace since 2011. But it also cautions that expansion is heavily dependent on the service sector.

Markit describes February's manufacturing growth as "subdued" and warns that continued weakness in the sector "remains a major concern."
