The European Parliament is expected today to create a new committee to investigate whether the EU and its member states have been too lax in monitoring emission regulations.

Reuters reports the probe could last one year. The panel will focus on the Volkswagen AG diesel cheating scandal as it looks for evidence of “maladministration” of the region’s regulatory rules.

One parliament representative tells Reuters the new committee will look into suspicions that member states and the EU failed to intervene in spite of test evidence indicating VW was manipulating emission tests. The company has admitted rigging 11 million diesels with software designed to evade pollution limits.
