EU ministers are backing proposed rules that would give the European Commission power to sanction carmakers directly if they cheat on emission tests, Reuters reports.
The measure, which would enable the EC to conduct random emission checks and levy fines against vehicle manufacturers, won’t take effect unless the European Parliament enacts it into law.
Under current EU rules, national regulatory bodies approve or revoke emission certifications on behalf of the entire region. But EC ministers have been frustrated in the wake of Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal by what they describes as a lack of willingness at the EU member level to vigorously check for possible infractions by other carmakers.
