The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reached a settlement to collect at least $39 million from Motors Liquidation Co., the remains of pre-bankruptcy General Motors Co.

The EPA will receive payment in GM stock and warrants to recover the some of its costs for cleaning up the Onondaga Superfund Site in upstate New York. A federal bankruptcy judge previously ordered GM to pay the EPA another $33 million for cleanup at other parts of the site.

GM operated the former Inland Fisher Guide plant on the Onondaga site for more than 40 years. The agency says the company's plastic molding, metal finishing and paint contributed to the contamination of local waterways.
