The U.S. has directed Daimler AG to reduce the city fuel economy ratings for its 2013 and 2014 Mercedes-Benz C300 sedans by 1 mpg.
The Environmental Protection Agency says low-emission versions of the model should be labeled with a city rating of 19 mpg instead of the 20 mpg Mercedes has claimed.
EPA concedes the adjustment is small. But by way of warning other carmakers, it says it will continue "strong oversight of fuel economy values" to ensure fair competition and to help consumers make accurate decisions about purchases.
The agency notes that other Mercedes models it checked were accurately labels.
