Hybrid and all-electric vehicles captured a record 52% of new-car sales in Norway last year, the Norwegian Road Federation reports.

Electrified vehicles are backed by hefty government subsidies, accounted for 40% of Norway’s new-car sales in 2016. Owners of such vehicles enjoy many other perks, including tax exemptions and special access to toll roads, ferries and parking areas.

Reuters notes that the NRF’s analysis includes regular hybrid vehicles, which have limited range in all-electric mode and carry batteries that cannot be recharged externally. When those vehicles are ignored and only plug-in hybrids are counted, sales of electrified cars in the country accounted for 39% of the market in 2017 and 29% in 2016, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency.

Norway set a nonbinding goal last year that would limit new-car sales by 2025 to those with zero emissions. Reuters notes that the country is able to bolster demand for electrified vehicles because of wealth amassed through its oil and gas production.
