This week the European Commission is likely to announce plans for new carbon dioxide caps for passenger vehicles and vans that would take effect after 2020, Bloomberg News reports.
The news service cites a confidential strategy paper expected to be released on Wednesday. The draft says the EC is assessing the cost, benefit, impact and timing of new regulations. The report envisions the new standards taking effect sometime after 2020 and before 2030.
The EU has targeted a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, primarily CO2, by 2020 compared with a 1990 baseline. The EU also aims to achieve a 40% reduction in such emissions by 2030.
The 2020 target will require a cap of 95 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions from cars by 2021 and a limit of 147 g/km for commercial vehicles by 2020.
