James Dyson, inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner that carries his name, confirms reports that his company is developing an electric car and intends to introduce it by 2020.
A team of 400 Dyson engineers has been working secretly for more than two years at Dyson headquarters in Wiltshire, England, on an electric motor and advanced solid-state battery for the car. The project was leaked last year in a report that divulged government funding for the five-year battery program.
In 2015 Dyson spent $90 million to acquire Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Sakti3 Inc., a University of Michigan spinoff that is developing solid-state battery technologies.
Last year the company hired David Wyler, head of procurement at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd., to take on the same role at Dyson. A few months later the company added Andrew Watson, former executive at software developer Symantec Corp., to be Dyson’s head of machine learning.
So far this year Dyson has added Ricardo Reyes, a former spokesman for EV maker Tesla Inc., and Ian Minards, Aston Martin’s product development chief.
