Daimler AG will use the Paris auto show in October to present a Mercedes-Benz electric car prototype that can travel 500 km (310 miles) per charge. A production version is likely before the end of this decade.
Product development chief Thomas Weber tells reporters the car is undergoing road tests now. The vehicle is a response to Tesla Motor Inc.’s Model S electric sedan and Model X electric crossover, both of which can travel about 300 miles before requiring recharging.
Separately, Weber confirms Daimler will debut its fourth-generation electric Smart car at the end of this year. The company targets annual EV sales greater than 100,000 units by 2020. A fuel-cell SUV is scheduled to go into limited production in 2017.
