Daimler to Replace Takata Airbag Inflators in 840,000 Vehicles

Daimler AG says it will recall about 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars and 136,000 Daimler commercial vans in the U.S. to replace driver-side Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode in a crash.
Daimler booked €340 million ($384 million) in 2015 to cover the callbacks. The special charge will reduce full-year net profit and group earnings before interest and taxes to €8.7 billion ($9.8 billion) and €13.2 billion ($14.9 billion), respectively, according to the company.
The campaign is part of an expanded multi-brand Takata recall announced in January by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The new callback will cover 5 million inflators in vehicles sold by Audi, BMW, Ford, Daimler, Honda, Mazda, Saab and Volkswagen.
Those car companies and four others are already replacing about 23 million inflators in 19 million vehicles in the U.S. The callbacks apply to Takata inflators used in driver frontal, passenger frontal and/or front-seat side-impact airbag systems.
