Cummins Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russian truckmaker Kamaz PTC to develop electrified powertrains for future Kamaz commercial trucks and buses.

Cummins will supply fully electric powertrains to Kamaz for use in city buses and medium-range delivery trucks. Under the agreement, Cummins also will develop a hybrid transmission for Kamaz heavy-duty trucks.

The partners, which also have a 1-year-old joint venture for conventional engines, will test prototype electric systems in a range of Kamaz vehicles. Cummins showed a concept electric truck last year.

Kamaz was formed in 1976. Daimler AG acquired a 15% stake in the company in 2008.
