Continental AG and Group Oerlikon have agreed to develop and market integrated electric motor and transmission systems for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Conti's powertrain unit will contribute its know-how in making conventional electric and hybrid powertrains. The Swiss industrial engineering firm's Oerlikon Graziano SpA's unit in Italy will focus on matching transmission gearing and shift points to the performance characteristics of the electric motor.

The partners say they will decide on a case-by-base basis which of them will assume the role of system supplier for specific projects.
