Thousands of climate activists staged protests on Saturday in front of the entrance to the Frankfurt auto show, according to German police.

The protestors, asserting “we are in the midst of a climate crisis,” want a sharp cut in carbon dioxide emissions from cars. The German auto industry is on track to lower CO2 from new cars 30% by 2039 compared with 1999, Bloomberg News notes. Germany has pledged to reduce the country’s overall CO2 55% by then.
Environmental groups call SUVs “environment killers” and are pushing to stop sales of the extremely popular vehicles. Germany’s carmaker trade group, VDA, estimates that the country’s auto industry employs about 820,000 people.
