Next month Chrysler Group LLC will launch a pair of global campaigns to eliminate software glitches that could interfere with the operation of antilock brakes, electronic stability control and instrument panel lighting in 142,800 of its 2014 model trucks and SUVs.

The recalls will cover 132,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and 10,800 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with mid-level instrument clusters. Most of the vehicles are in the U.S.

The pickup truck campaign will fix a software bug that can cause the instrument cluster backlighting and warning lamps to go on and off randomly. Chrysler engineers blame the problem on digital memory in the IP controller that may not activate as it should.

In the recalled Jeeps, Chrysler reports similar intermittent IP lighting behavior but attributes it to an issue with software in the ABS controller that also could affect the performance of the vehicle's antilock braking and stability control systems. The company will update software in the ABS module and IP controller.
