Fiat Chrysler Automobile CEO Sergio Marchionne says hybrid powertrains will be a "very large component" of Chrysler's strategy to meet U.S. fuel economy standards for 2025.
The rule will require passenger vehicles to average 54.5 mpg. Says Marchionne, "You can't get it without hybrids."
He made the comment at dedication ceremonies for Chrysler's $142 million transmission plant in Tipton, Ind. The facility will extend the company's capacity to make 9-speed automatic transmissions to be installed in almost all its front-drive vehicles. Almost all of Chrysler's rear-drive vehicles are transitioning to a new 8-speed automatic.
