NextEV Inc., a startup founded by Chinese billionaire William Li in 2014, plans to unveil its first model—an all-electric supercar—by year-end.
The vehicle’s performance is expected to rival that of McLaren Automotive’s P1 hybrid supercar, generating as much as 1,000 hp and a sub-3 second zero-to-60 mph time, according to various media reports.
The high-powered EV is designed to “attract attention” and demonstrate NextEV’s capabilities, co-President Martin Leach tells Autocar. But he says the company's longer term plan is to offer a wide range of models at various performance levels and price points.
NextEV has been developing the supercar at its Munich design center over the last two years and plans to build it at a new plant in the U.K., according to Autocar.
Leach previously headed Ford of Europe and Maserati. NextEV has hired other executives and engineers from BMW, Cisco, Ford, Italdesign Giugiaro, Tesla and Volkswagen. The company reportedly has a staff of 1,000 workers at six locations in Asia, Europe and the U.S., and aims to add 4,000 more by the end of 2017.
