China’s central government reports that the country’s gross domestic product increased 6.8% in July-September compared with the same period last year.
That rate compares with growth of 6.7% last year and 6.9% in the first half of 2017. Beijing’s target for this year is 6.5%.
China’s economy expanded by an average 10% per year for decades leading up to the global financial crisis. Now the government is trying to manage a slowdown in growth to a sustainable, single-digit pace driven more by domestic consumption and less by exports.
