Passenger-vehicle sales in China rose 11% to 1.8 million vehicles last month, the fastest growth rate so far this year, reports the government-backed China Assn. of Automobile Manufacturers. The group’s results agree with figures announced last week by the China Passenger Car Assn.
CAAM says China’s demand in May for SUV/crossovers surged 36% to 627,000, or 35% of the market.
Deliveries of domestic-brand passenger vehicles last month climbed 13% to 716,900 cars, aided by an array of low-price SUV/crossovers. Sales of German, Japanese and U.S. brands grew 20%, 18% and 11%, respectively.
Car sales in January-May gained 8% to 9.2 million vehicles, according to CAAM. Last week CPCA put the sales total at 9.12 million units.
