BYD Co. Ltd. in Shenzhen, China, says it will begin making electric-powered buses in Brazil in 2015 at a rate of 1,000 per year.
The company will erect a 200-million real ($90 million) factory in Campinas to assemble the buses. The facility will join plants in China and the U.S. that make electric buses. The Nikkei says BYD plans to open a similar facility in Bulgaria.
BYD sold fewer than 2,000 electric cars, buses and taxis last year. The company is 9% owned by billionaire investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. firm.
