China's Ministry of Public Security is studying a plan to require the use of child safety seats in the country, Bloomberg News reports.

The news service says China has half as many cars as the U.S. but about three times the child fatality rate for children in vehicles. It says car crashes are the leading cause of death for children under the age of 14.

China has more than 76 million registered private passenger vehicles in use compared with about 8.5 million vehicles in 2003, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics.
