General Motors Co. says cumulative sales of its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid car have surpassed 100,000 units since the vehicle was launched in 2010. At that time the carmaker had hoped to sell as many as 60,000 Volts per year.
The Volt’s best year to date was in 2012, when 23,500 vehicles were sold. Volumes dropped in each of the last three years but are up about 75% to 9,800 units through the first half of 2016, thanks to the launch of the second-generation model.
GM estimates the Volts have logged a combined 1.5 billion miles in EV mode and a total 2.5 billion cumulative miles over the last six years. This has saved nearly 58 million gallons of gasoline, according to the carmaker.
