China’s Chery Automobile Co. says its first electrified model for the European market won’t arrive until at least 2020.
Chery unveiled the vehicle, the Exeed TX small crossover, at last year’s Frankfurt auto show. CEO Chen Anning tells the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the model will be offered with a choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric powertrain.
The plug-in version of the Exeed will combine a 110-hp gasoline engine and 85-kW electric motor with enough onboard battery capacity to travel 70 km (44 miles) in electric-only mode.
Chen also says the company plans to build a product development center near Frankfurt to support its push into the European market. Last year he told Reuters that Chery’s goal is to eventually raise the proportion of its sales generated outside China to one-third from one-quarter currently.
