A new round of U.S. recalls by 13 carmakers targets some 652,000 Takata Corp. front passenger seat airbag inflators that could explode when triggered by a crash.
The new series of callbacks will involve models made by Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Ferrari, Jaguar Land Rover, Karma, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Tesla.
Carmakers are expected to eventually replace about 70 million Takata inflators in 45 million vehicles sold in the U.S.
Initial recalls targeted vehicles in hot and humid climates, where the devices are more likely to deteriorate. Now the campaigns are widening to include virtually all Takata inflators, regardless of location, that were made without a drying agent that helps stabilize their propellants.
