Ten carmakers are finally ready to hire an independent engineering firm to determine what makes some Takata Corp. airbag inflators explode when activated.
The group, led by Toyota Motor Corp., was formed in December out of frustration that Takata hadn't clearly identified the cause of the problem, which has been linked to six fatalities. The defect has prompted the carmakers to recall about 24 million Takata airbag systems worldwide since 2009.
The group reportedly will choose David Kelly, a former acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to coordinate the investigation. Takata, which is conducting its own independent probe, has agreed to support the group.
