Eight major carmakers have agreed to support a single plug for electric vehicles that can be used for all four existing types slow and fast AC and DC recharging systems.
Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen are showing the system at this week's EVS26 conference in Los Angeles. Most of those companies endorsed the approach last autumn.
The plug, which is expected to appear in EVs and plug-ins in 2013, would allow an EV operator to connect to an at-home AC or DC charger, a fast three-phase AC charger or ultra-fast DC charger.
SAE International plans to publish a standard this summer that will extend its existing Type 1 AC charging plug to include fast-charging connections. The so-called Combined Charging System is designed to be compatible with "smart grid" broadband communication methods worldwide.
Backers say the system will encourage development of an EV recharging infrastructure by creating a uniform global set of dimensions, electrical systems, charge controllers and safety mechanisms.
