California electric utilities are asking for permission to raise customer rates to fund a five-year, $1 billion-plus plan promote electric vehicles and install thousands of charging stations for cars, buses and trucks, Bloomberg News reports.

The facilities would help support the state’s goal of putting 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025. California wants by 2030 to lower greenhouse gas emissions to 40% of 1990 levels with a “very aggressive” plan for such vehicles.

Bloomberg notes that EV charging is a potential growth area for utilities that could offset slumping sales caused by more efficient appliances and the expanding installation of home solar panels.
