California is considering legislation that would enable buyers of electric vehicles to get an immediate discount of as much as $10,000 on their purchase.
The California Electric Vehicle Initiative is patterned after the state’s successful program to promote rooftop solar panels. The EV bill passed in the California assembly earlier this month and goes before Senate panels next week.
The plan, which would favor low-income customers, aims to offset the impending decline in federal tax breaks for EVs with as much as $3 billion in state-level funding. The program also would simplify the current rebate process by eliminating the paperwork and delay in receiving compensation.
Backers note that the program would bolster the state’s effort to put 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025. Today’s federal tax rebate plan covers only the first 200,000 eligible vehicles sold nationwide by a given carmaker. EV promoters worry that the program will dry up just as EVs begin to gain traction with consumers.
