General Motors Co. engineers reported eight years ago that the ignition switches in 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX crossovers could be nudged out of the "on" position by the driver's knee, according to Reuters, which cites documents released by switch supplier Delphi Automotive plc.
In February a similar issue prompted GM to launch a recall to replace the ignition switches in 2.6 million less expensive cars, including the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion sedans. That campaign does not include the SRX.
Delphi supplied the GM-designed ignition switches for all three models. Reuters says the company's disclosures to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show GM used the same component to make the switches in all three vehicles more difficult to turn off for the 2007 model year.
Delphi's documents infer but don't clarify whether early versions of the SRX were affected by the same problems that prompted the Cobalt-Ion recall.
