CEO James Verrier says powertrain supplier BorgWarner Inc. would consider spending as much as $1 billion to expand its capabilities in power management electronics.

Verrier tells Bloomberg News the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company also would be “very open” to “even electronics in a broader sense.”

Next year BorgWarner will begin supplying an undisclosed Chinese carmaker with a hybrid transmission that includes an electric propulsion motor. The system was developed by Remy International Inc., which BorgWarner acquired in July 2015 for $950 million.
