The Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Chandler, Ariz., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.
The legendary driving school owes as much as $10 million to creditors. The company plans to remain open while it restructures its debts.
Founded by race car driver Bob Bondurant 50 years ago in California, the school moved to its present location—with a 15-turn, 1.6-mile track—in 1990. More than 300,000 students have taken classes at the school over the years.
The school has 15 instructors, including the 85-year-old Bondurant. Among its corporate partners are Borla, Dodge, Forza Motorsport, Goodyear, Shell and Tremec.
Another top U.S. driving school, Skip Barber Racing, filed for bankruptcy last year. Several other schools have closed or struggled to remain open after the 2008 recession.
