Two Chinese companies, and the founder of one of them, have been fined for copying BMW AG’s trademark, Shanghai Daily reports.

The Shanghai Intellectual Property Court ordered Deguo Baoma Group (which translates as “German BMW Group”), its founder Zhou Leqin, and a fashion clothing company called Chuangjia to pay BMW a combined 3 million yuan ($432,000).

The two companies registered a “BMN” trademark that looked very much like BMW’s iconic logo and have used it since 2009 on apparel and accessories marketed by Chuangjia, according to the court. Over that period the companies also altered the BMN logo to increasingly resemble BMW’s trademark.

The court ruled that the defendants had infringed upon BMW’s trademark, which is registered in China, by taking advantage of the carmaker’s reputation.
