BMW AG is weighing whether to phase out its i3 electric city car and i8 hybrid sports coupe when current versions of those vehicles end several years from now.
Stefan Juraschek, who heads the company’s electric powertrain unit, tells Automotive News the two cars are technology showcases rather than vehicles that can be expanded into families of variant models.
Both models are now more than four years old, but each has been updated within the past 12 months. Juraschek says BMW’s next-generation electric platforms will be ready to carry successor models after 2021. By then, he says, powertrain components will be assembled in modules tailored to each new vehicle type.
BMW said last week at the New York auto show that it will introduce the all-new i4 and iNext electrics in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
