BMW to Extend Driving Range of i3 EV

BMW AG plans to extend the driving range of its i3 electric vehicle to make it competitive with the Nissan Leaf EV, reports Auto Express.
Nissan boosted the range of the 2016 Leaf hatchback by about 25% to an estimated 155 miles on the European driving cycle. The i3—without the car’s optional range-extending gasoline engine—can travel about 100 miles between charges.
BMW officials tell the U.K. enthusiast publication that the company will announce details about the new i3 by year end. The increased driving range likely will come from a higher capacity and/or denser battery pack.
The i3 currently is fitted with a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery, while the new Leaf has a 30-kWh pack.
