BMW AG says tougher emission rules in Europe may force it to build more than 100,000 electric vehicles per year by 2020 regardless of market demand for the cars.
The company has attracted some 11,000 orders for its €35,000 i3 small EV since November, when the car went on sale in Germany. BMW will begin delivering its scissor-door i8 plug-in hybrid sport coupe in June. The exotically designed all-wheel-drive model has a base price of €126,000.
BMW will need strong sales for its "I" series green vehicles to help the company contribute to the EU's target of industrywide carbon dioxide emissions of 95 grams per kilometer from 130 g/km in 2013. Each carmaker has its own target. BMW hopes to lower its fleet average to 105 g/km by 2020 from 133 g/km last year.
