BMW AG says demand for the i8 hybrid it will begin delivering in June is outpacing the car's unspecified production ramp-up rate.
The carbon-fiber-bodied car has a range of 600 km with a hybrid system that combines a 231-hp 3-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine, 131-hp electric motor and 5.2-kW lithium-ion battery.
BMW says the i8 which is expected to retail for about €97,400 can zip from zero to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds, deliver fuel economy of 2.1 liters per 100 km (112 mpg U.S./135 mpg U.K.) and emit only 49 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.
BMW will begin producing the car in April. The company has been collecting pre-orders in major markets around the world since last autumn.
