BMW AG says strong initial demand for its new i3 electric city car suggests sales will surpass 10,000 units in 2014.
BMW tells reporters it has collected customer reservations for 8,000 of the little four-seaters. The i3 will debut in Germany in mid-November at a price of €35,000. Sales will begin in China, Japan and the U.S. early next year.
Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner tells reporters in Amsterdam that the company will expand capacity for the EV if demand continues at its current pace.
Last weekend Wirtschaftswoche reported that fabrication problems involving the i3's carbon-fiber-reinforced body caused a 10-day production halt. Eichiner says the car's introduction has not been affected by what he describes as routine issues typical of any new-product launch.
